Lafayette Tea

October 26th
Farewell Tea with General Lafayette
In partnership with the Fort Nelson Chapter of the Portsmouth DAR, the museum will host a tea featuring Mark Schneider, a nationally acclaimed General Marquis de Lafayette interpreter. He will discuss Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of 1824/1825, highlighting events in Portsmouth. Museum interpreters will describe the Hill family’s connections to Lafayette’s visit. The menu will include traditional tea sandwiches, French pastry desserts, and Five Sisters Tea, a signature blend sold exclusively by the museum. Ticket prices are $35 for museum members and $45 for non-members.

Lafayette Lecture

October 19th
Julie Dunn, Hill House Museum Board member and local researcher, will lecture at 1 PM about General Lafayette’s visit to Portsmouth. She will be joined by “The Women of the House,” three museum interpreters who will describe the Hill family’s connections to Lafayette’s visit. Light refreshments will be served. Frank Womble, a Board of Governors member for the American Friends of Lafayette, will lecture at 2 PM on Lafayette’s visits to Hampton Roads in 1824 and 1825, and the local plans for commemorating these events in 2024/2025. About the Friday, October 27th event:

The Hill House Museum is offering an additional event! A Night at the Museum with Voices from the Grave. 

On this night of ghosts, the Hill Family and special guests return in flesh and blood with exciting costumed theatrical scenes. We’ve got Yellow Fever terror, cute puppies on pillows, an archaeologist digging up the back yard, and so much more at this mysterious Night at the Museum.

 

Meet the ghosts of the Hill family and notable citizens of Portsmouth! Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the marketplace or at the musuem. A Night at the Museum tours will run from 7-10 PM.  Tickets will be sold for tours starting 7-8pm and 8-9pm. Once 5-10 people arrive and check in a tour will start.  50 tickets will be sold per 1 hour timeslot.  

**The ghost walk tour takes about 1 hour and the Hill House tour is about 45 minutes, so please plan your tour times accordingly. 

** If you only want to attend the Hill House Event, please park at the Middle Street Garage. 

** There will be a shuttle running people from the Ghost Walk Market to the Hill House as needed.

Picture This: a Photographic Journey of Portsmouth’s Past through photographic images of Downtown, Lincolnsville, Newtown, and Olde Towne.

This photo exhibit will offer a unique glimpse into Portsmouth's past.  Visitors will sightsee through hundreds of photos capturing Portsmouth's history, while looking at buildings no longer existing, and viewing the diverse past of this amazing city. Through the lens of photography, this exhibit will showcase Portsmouth’s past and present treasures by focusing on the areas of Olde Towne, Downtown, Newtown, and Lincolnsville.  Photos will be exhibited throughout the museum and visitors can go back in time while taking a photographic journey through Portsmouth’s past.

Holiday Tea

Come celebrate a Holiday Tea event at the Hill House, and enjoy a wonderful assortment of desserts, scones, and sandwiches as you savor a cup of our famous Hill House blend tea.   Also, the museum will be decorated for the holidays assuring to uplift your holiday spirts or rekindle a festive memory.    

$35 per person

($30 for PHA members)

Night At the Museum

Stop by the Hill House Museum Friday evening and tour it at night.  The museum will be decorated with mourning textiles along with a “make-shift” Victorian funeral in the upstairs parlor and be introduced to Victorian mourning customs. 

The Hill House Museum will be open on Friday, October 29th from 6:00pm-9:00pm.  Only $5 per person to tour the museum at night and view the exhibit.  Tickets sold at the door the night of the tour and at the City sponsored Grave Affair event on Court Street.

Museum Day

On Saturday, October 9, 2021 the Hill House Museum will host the sailors from the USS Constellation and soldiers from Fort Norfolk as they discus the Battle of Craney Island and the role Portsmouth and its militia played in the War of 1812.  This event will be in conjunction with Portsmouth's Museum Day and will be set-up in the gardens of the museum.  Everyone who stops by the Hill House Museum will not only learn more about the sailor’s tools, food/drink, weapons, and personal items but also tour the Hill House as well, Portsmouth’s only historic home museum.  Free to the public.

Mardi Gras Tea

Come to the Hill House Museum and celebrate Mardi Gras with a Tea. A prize will be given to the best Mardi Gras attire/costume, a masked photo booth will be available, and many more celebrations. Enjoy a hot cup of tea, scones, tea-sandwiches, desserts, and tour the house.

Antique Toy Exhibit

On display at the Hill House Museum will be toy trains and many other playthings bringing back fond memories of childhood. Discover a variety of antique toys that captured and sparked the imagination of children in the past. This exhibit aims to evoke childhood memories over the decades (19th Century-1990's)

The exhibit opens December 4th and ends December 29th. Open on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 12:00 pm-3:00 pm. $5 admission fee

COME VISIT THE HILL HOUSE MUSEUM FOR FREE ON JUNE 1ST

You will be amazed as you step back in time in this 4-story, 1825 English-basement home. The Hill sisters donated the house, including every piece of furniture, china, crystal, pottery, carpet, and all the window dressings, paintings, ceramics, and household goods that had been collected over a period of 190 years. Mr. Donnie Sadler, Vice President of the Nansemond Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Virginia, will speak in the gardens of the Museum. He will be speaking about artifacts found from the Hill House privy dig, along with showcasing artifacts from his own private collection.
